The Maasai People & Culture
This is a Nilotic ethnic group of people living in Northern, Southern, and Central Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Most Maasai speaks the official languages of Kenya and Tanzania that is Swahili and English. Most Maasai people of Kenya and Tanzania welcome visits to their villages to experience and learn more about their culture, lifestyle, and traditions, and this is usually done at a fee.
Maasai People & Culture occupy the Great lakes region and they are believed to have come via South Sudan. Nilotic speakers including Maasai, Turkana, and Kalenjin are pastoralists and are most feared for their reputations as warriors and cattle rustlers and have adopted customs and practices from the neighboring Cushitic speaking groups including social organization, vocabulary, age system, and circumcision among other
Many ethnic groups that had already formed settlements in the region were displaced by the Maasai forcefully. Raiders used spears and shields but were most feared for throwing clubs that would go as high as 100 meters. Maasai People were a very strong group that stood against slavery and never cordoned off acts of human beings and outsiders looking for people to enslave avoided the Maasai people.
Maasai People & Culture
Culturally, the Maasai worship a black god called “Engai Narok” but despite believing in the black god, many Masaai has adopted Christianity and Islam. Traditional Masaai lifestyle centers around cattle keeping as a source of food. A man’s wealth in Masaai is measured according to the number of cows and children he has for example if he has 50 cows and above is more respectable and the more children, the better. If a man has many cows and no children, he is still considered poor. Maasai eat meat, drink milk, and on special occasions drink blood.
Goats, bulls, and lambs are slaughtered on special occasions and ceremonies. Maasai life evolves mostly on cattle keeping but with the increased rusting and dwindling of cows, they have adopted agriculture hence growing crops that as sorghum, rice potatoes, and cabbage mostly referred to by Maasai as goat leaves.
The main misconception about the Maasai is that one is supposed to kill a lion before circumcision to enter adulthood hunting lions has been banned in East Africa but killing a lion gives one celebrity status in the community. Piercing and stretching earlobes are common among the Maasai people and different materials can be used to pierce the ear for example thorns and twigs as well as stones.
Circumcision in Maasai People
During this process, a boy is expected to endure the operation in silence because any expression of pain would bring dishonor upon him. Because any exclamation and movements can cause the elder to make a mistake in the delicate and tedious process hence prolonged healing or dis-functioning. The healing process usually takes 3-4 months and boys who have been circumcised are supposed to stay in black clothes until they are healed.
Maasai People are mainly identified by their special clothing which can be worn by adding beads which makes them look so very special. It has however been worn by different people.
